Yes yes yes, I know, I haven’t posted anything since October of last year! We’re already at the tail end of March and this is my first post of 2021. Shocking service delivery, I know. For those 2 or three of you that have been checking back to the site regularly to see what is happening, I am truly sorry that I haven’t posted anything for what can only be described as an absolute AGE. However, there are a few reasons for this, and I hope you guys will understand why there has been such a long silence, especially after a post on our Facebook page announcing that big news was coming…. well here’s the big news.
I have been writing a few articles that are due to be posted at some point, but unfortunately I haven’t had the time to edit or add photography or polish them to the point where I would be happy to publish them. In stead I have had to spend my time ensuring my livelihood. SO, as some of you may know, I work as the operations director of our family business, the main part of which is a gas retail company. We were extremely lucky that when the COVID lockdowns started, we were still allowed to operate since gas distribution was considered an essential service. Unfortunately, we didn’t anticipate just how badly the lockdown would affect us, and some of our customers, in particular the hospitality industry. Since all restaurants and hotels etc. were closed down over-night, a huge number of our larger volume customers simply disappeared. What made matters worse, is that a large number of them didn’t come back once the restrictions started lifting either. Adding insult to injury is the fact that people are generally not spending money right now because times are tough.
Effectively what this has meant for the company is that a major re-structure was needed, and effectively I am no longer in the employ of the gas company, even though it continues to operate and I continue to own a stake in it. This has left me free to do something else with my time. And what does a car freak do when left to his own devices… he gets into the motor trade!
So all of that is a very long-winded way of saying, I’ve been quiet because I have been establishing my own Used Car Dealership! That’s right! Mr Q is now the purveyor of used cars. This process has been INCREDIBLY difficult from an admin standpoint, and I still don’t fully understand some aspects of it, nor is it fully completed yet, but I will do another full post JUST on how to establish your own dealership, but if you thought it was as easy as buying a couple of cars and then selling them…. you’re wrong.
My dealership is called Q-Rated Cars and we aim to deliver Carefully Curated Used Cars. What that means for our customers is that they can shop for their next car, safe in the knowledge that every single car we buy into inventory has been very carefully inspected, top to bottom and we have done everything we can to make sure that we don’t have any lemons on our floor. Obviously most of my readers are car guys/girls and they know how to check out a used car to make sure it is mechanically sound and not something that was written off and patched back together with some duct tape and body filler. However, most car buyers are not car experts, and having someone like us on your side, checking the car out before you buy it, should give you a little bit of peace of mind. A quick look at the list of all the cars I have ever owned will reveal that I have bought and sold a fair number of second hand cars in my life, and I have NEVER bought anything that gave me any major problems.
I want to break the stereotypical images of the used car salesman who is just trying to rip you off, sell you a bucket of bolts and then washes his hands of all responsibility when you end up at the side of the road in a cloud of steam. This is why Q-Rated Cars will actively advertise the fact that we are registered with the Motor Industry Ombudsman and that we fully comply to all requirements under the Consumer Protection Act, which effectively gives all customers a 6 month warranty on all used cars purchased. Basically, Q-Rated Cars will only sell cars that I would personally be happy buying for myself.
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!
Additionally, I have been busy setting something else up that I have been wanting to do for EVER and just never had the time to do it. Q on Cars is going to transform into the new medium of moving picture video! That’s right, I’m starting a youtube channel! In fact the channel has already been created, even though there is no content on it yet. More details on this will be coming soon and once I have a couple of videos shot and edited, I will start posting content and send you all links via this site.
The channel will be mostly car reviews and similar car related content, but importantly, it will NOT be a car-based lifestyle channel, this will be a hard-core journalistic review channel. To ensure journalistic integrity, I obviously won’t be posting reviews on the cars that I’m selling through the dealership, since reviewing cars that I’m also selling could be considered a conflict of interest. IF I find a car at the dealership that I really want to review, the review will be done honestly and only published after the car has already been sold. That way no-one can accuse me of making rose-coloured reviews of cars that I’m selling.
The second exciting part about the youtube channel is that I will be using my own original music recorded by me in my recording studio at home. Music has always been a huge passion of mine and this seems like a good opportunity to combine my love of cars and my love of music into one productive outlet.
SO there you have it and hopefully it helps you understand why I have been so quiet.
